Bad Reichenhall’s Old Salt Works
An Industrial Monument and its Salt Museum
The Old Salt Works / Alte Saline in the Alpine Town of Bad Reichenhall are probably the most beautiful in the world. In any case they are one of Europe’s star industrial monuments and the only royal saltworks as their construction was ordered by King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1837. The main pump house and its chapel take center stage in this neo-romantic style brick complex. Everything here has remained largely unchanged over the past 150 years, such as the huge waterwheels in perpetual motion. Under the Old Saltworks hides a large underground network of dark tunnels and mysterious grottos.
